A NOD TO OUR HISTORIC ROOTS.

H.D. Buttercup occupies the landmark Helms Bakery Building, an exceptional example of Zigzag Moderne architecture. First opening its doors in 1931, Helms Bakery supplied local residents with fresh-baked bread delivered “Daily at Your Door” for more than four decades. The bakery won the contract for the 1932 Olympics held in L.A., and the building proudly bears original Olympic signage from the era. Most of L.A.’s young population visited the bakery as part of a popular elementary school tour program during the ’30s, ’40s, and ’50s.

In 2003, H.D. Buttercup undertook an extensive renovation to bring the building back to its original grandeur, revealing bow-truss ceilings, skylights, and pristine maple-plank floors. We pay homage to our roots with a museum exhibit highlighting the bakery’s history, located just beyond the main entrance.
